Minutes April 18 2005

MCLGA Meeting held on April 18th 2005 to discuss Centenary in 2009

Present: Gillian Kirkwood (Convenor), Maggie McPherson (Captain MCLGA), Karen Ballantyne, Linda Caine, Noreen Fenton, Mairi Pollock, Janet Wake, Pamela Williamson.
Apologies: Ellice Cackett (Vice Captain MCLGA)

  1. Progress on gathering historical information was reviewed.
    • Pamela and Noreen had both been through the AGM minutes from the founding of the Association in 1909 up to 1968 and had collected a great deal of interesting and useful information . Noreen had put her information on an Excel Spreadsheet which she would send electronically to Gillian and Janet. (Action Noreen)
    • Janet had been going through some of the Secretary's old records and had started to put information up on the Centenary Web site, so that it could be accessed by all the Committee. So far this included information on 5-Aside (Inter-Club) Matches - including results from 1933-38. She had also put up information on Trophies, and Prizewinners from 1933-1961.
    • Karen now had the historical information on the Juniors up to 1997 and would be going through this.
    • Gillian already had a great deal of information on the history and early beginnings of the Association.
  2. It was agreed that a book should be published to mark the Centenary of MCLGA. It was envisaged that this might be 80-100 pages in length, contain photographs and have a soft cover. Copies would be distributed to all members (~400), some other associations and collectors. ~500 copies might be required. Gillian would make some enquiries about possible publishers. (Action Gillian)
  3. The SLGA had agreed that the County Finals would be held in Midlothian during the Centenary Year, 2009. MCLGA would need to suggest possible courses/venues over the next year or so. (Action Maggie)
  4. Events for the Centenary Year were discussed. Possibilities included:
    • Publishing a book (agreed - see above).
    • Hosting the County Finals (agreed - see above).
    • Matches with other Counties celebrating their centenaries (Dumbarton & Argyll, Stirling, -others) (Action - Gillian to check this).
    • A Lunch - Costs, Speakers and Venue to be considered further.
    • A Special Event for the County - to be discussed further.
    • A memento for each member of the Association - to be discussed further.
  5. Finance was discussed. Funds would be required to publish a book, for lunch costs (speakers, menus, flowers and possibly subsidising other costs). It was suggested that a levy should be collected ((perhaps £5 per annum) from all Midlothian members over the next 4 years. This would provide £8000 of which at least half might be needed to publish the book. Maggie would discuss this at the next meeting of the MCLGA Committee. (Action Maggie)
  6. Publicity and Advertising were also mentioned briefly. It was thought that some might be prepared to contribute towards the costs of publishing the book (with an acknowledgment for their help in the book).
  7. The various headings on the Centenary web site were discussed to facilitate the collection of information and material. It was agreed that:
    • Pamela would pull together information on 5-Asides (Inter-Club) Matches and send this to Janet to put up on the web site (Action Pamela).
    • Noreen would send her excel spreadsheet to Gillian and Janet (Action Noreen)..
    • Mairi would collect information on the SUGS matches (Action Mairi).
    • Karen would collect information on Juniors (Action Karen).
    • Linda would collect information on County Matches, including Squads and Training offered (Action Linda).
    • Ellice would be asked to collect information on Midlothian Clubs, including those no longer in existence (Action Ellice).
    • Information should be collected from senior members of the Association and other personalities. It was thought that the best way would be to arrange for 2-3 at a time to meet with a member of the Committee present. It was agreed that Janet should contact Jane George, to see if she would be available to help with interviewing people and collecting this information.(Action Janet).

It was agreed provisionally that the next meeting of the Centenary Committee would be held on Thursday October 20th 2005 at 7.30pm at 6 Hallhead Road.
